Delaware
- Delaware was founded in 1638, founded by Peter Minuit and The New Sweden Company. It was founded for trade and agriculture profit. Also, the Duke of York wanted Delaware to secure the colony of Pennsylvania.
- Economy- Delaware exported agricultural and natural items but also iron ore products such as kettles, tools, nails, and big blocks of iron that were shipped to England. Delaware and other Middle Colonies were known as the Breadbasket colonies because they grew so much wheat and rye that was also shipped to England. Some of the main in industries in these states were livestock, corn, wheat, iron, lumber, textiles, shipbuilding and furs.
- Geography- Delaware is a flat, low Atlantic Coastal Plain which was covered and surrounded in swamps, with over 30,000 acres of it. The Geography of most of the middle colonies was mixed with the New England and Southern colonies but contained fertile soil and good farming/ plantations. The climate was made up of warm summers and mild winters as well.
- Government- Since the Duke of York wanted Delaware to secure Pennsylvania, the two combined and shared their legislative assemblies. In 1701, Delaware now had a separate assembly but they still shared governors and it wasn't until 1776 that Delaware separated from Pennsylvania. Delaware became a Proprietary colony which was when the territory was claimed by British crown then they would chose one or more proprietors that had full government power.
- Celebrity Residents- Caesar Rodney, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jacob Broom, Howard Pyle, George Read, Robert Montgomery Bird, and John Phillips.
- Religion- Delaware was not dominated by a specific religion, but had religious tolerance. Delaware was mainly made of Quaker, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, Mennonite and more.
- Residency Requirements- Your religion had to branch off somewhat of the Christian faith.
- Target Residents- The residents that were persuaded here were farmers, this is because part of the reason why Delaware was founded was to be a flourishing farming colony!
- Founding Documents- The Main Document would be the Royal Charter from King Charles II that would now allow colonists to settle there.
"AND that all Persons who also profess to believe in Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World, shall be capable to serve this Government in any Capacity, both legislatively and executively..."
This quote from the Charter of Delaware-1701 says that if you are Christian, you can serve the Government. If you believe in Jesus, you are able to hold office and vote.
