Pennsylvaina
- Established in 1681 by William Penn to create a haven for Quakers. Also as a way for King Charles II to pay William Penn's father for a debt.
- It was part of the "breadbasket colonies" which produced a lot of wheat, barley, and rye. Also beef, pork, and butter since there was so much land for farming in the fertile soil. Contained textile mills and flax seed farms.
- There was a lot of woodland in Pennsylvania. In fact "sylvania" means woods. It also has plenty of coastline and mountains. The weather consisted of warm summers and mild winters in the middle colonies.
- The colony had a General Assembly set up which made decisions by voting. It was a Proprietary colony in which the crown gives the land to one or more people expecting a yearly payment in return.
- Celebrity Residents- Daniel Boone, Reggie Jackson, Bill Cosby, and Gene Kelly.
- Pennsylvania gave freedom to many religions surrounding the christian faith including Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and others but it was a safe haven for Quakers, one of England's most despised religions.
- You just had to believe in God and have a strong faith.
- Many people in Pennsylvania were Quakers, but, anyone looking to escape religious persecution could live there.
- A founding document was the charter granted by King Charles II. Another one is the Frame of Government which helped the foundation of the government.
" To ALL PEOPLE to whom these presents shall come WHEREAS King Charles the second by his letters, Patents under the Great Seal of England for the considerations therein mentioned hath been graciously pleased to give and grant unto me William Penn (By the name of William Penn Esq'r son and heir of Sr. William Penn deceased) and to my heirs and assigns forevel ALL that tract of land or province called PENNSYLVANIA..."
